Spring into Fall
One of the most common questions we receive from our clients is how to transition pieces from one season to the next. It is such a popular question, I continue to address it season after season with workshops and TV segments. Now that the weather is truly cooling down, I wanted to give you my favorite strategies to take your light spring and summer pieces into this fall season.
1.) Work in some winter white. Layer your silky brights and florals with winter white. A black jacket or grey sweater would feel out of place with the print of this top. Winter white is a more subtle approach that goes with the light, bright color and pattern of warm weather clothing.
2.) Mix in tweed. Tweed is one of my favorite cold-weather fabrics/patterns. It often acts as a neutral and can be mixed and matched easily with other patterns. The beauty of tweed is that you can pair with a short-sleeve summer tee like this stripe one — a favorite of a recent client — and immediately you have created a fall/winter look. Once temperatures really drop, layer your coat on top. When you remove your outerwear, you have a put-together winter look — complete with third piece!
3.) Add cheetah. How did we survive a fall season without cheetah print? Easiest way to add a warm, autumnal tone to your look. Don’t be afraid to push it a little either with some unexpected pattern mixing. A cheetah print can act as a neutral.
4.) Pull in burgundy or maroon. A recent client pulled out this dress that she had worn to a summer wedding with nude pumps and a blush cardigan. Could we bring a fall richness to this brightly colored confection? Absolutely. Right away, I knew we needed to pull out the darker tones in the dress — the burgundy.
5.) Suede shoes. Fall is all about nubby, fuzzy, chunky textures. There is a warmth to the texture of suede shoes that makes virtually any outfit fall-appropriate. I layered the last dress look with the burgundy sweater, but instead of nude pumps — a warm-weather staple — we paired with suede pumps.
