Falling from Summer: Last Season’s Trends that are Going Strong into Fall
As a personal stylist I always advise my clients not to just follow trends, but really look at what feels right for you. Still, it’s fun to see what hot for the season and what you can add to your closet that will revive and make new what you already own. Trends are what keep your look youthful, of-the-moment and fun. What I love to see are trends — like the cold shoulder, lace, velvet and chokers — that have more staying power. Those are pieces that I pulled for my clients last season and will pull again this season. These trends usually stick around for a longer period of time because they work for a variety of ages and body types. They also can be slightly reinvented each season to feel new. For example, the thin ’90s choker of spring is given more drama this season as statement pieces, and the laceup and cold shoulder tops become sweaters.
Lace-Up Detailing
Lace-up crop tops, body con dresses and bodysuits were huge this summer. This trend continues into fall, but we will see the lace detail not just down the front, but also in sleeves and other areas.
Cold Shoulder/Off-the-Shoulder
Bare those beautiful collarbones, ladies! Designers know shoulders are a part of the body that most women don’t mind showing. For fall, you’ll be seeing this trend go from lightweight blouses to off-the-shoulder sweaters and in darker colors, like gray and olive.
Chokers
And my personal favorite summer-to-fall-trend? The choker. Whether you’re uptown or downtown, you’ll be wearing a choker this fall. It doesn’t matter if its a trendy new statement choker or something a little more delicate, adding a little extra oomph around your neck will make you anything but basic.
