Start-up Wardrobe Essentials
San Francisco is known for being a unique city. We have cool summers, colorful people, amazing burritos and an incredibly casual dress code just about everywhere. And while the t-shirt and jeans that Mark Zuckerberg made synonymous with startup culture may work for some of us, I am finding that my tech industry clients don’t know what is appropriate to wear to work.
Here are three wardrobe essentials for women that will keep you looking professional, but still comfortable in a more casual work environment:
The Soft Jacket

The soft jacket is the perfect “third piece” that will upgrade a simple t-shirt and jeans. It is more structured than a cardigan, but not as serious as a blazer. It is a seasonless piece for San Franciscans, and a universally flattering piece for women. Here are some tips for finding the perfect soft jacket:
- If your body type is “more above the waist” opt for a hip-length jacket that will lengthen your torso. This chambray jacket by Halogen is a great option and includes sizes X-Small to XX-Large
- If your body type is “more in the middle” a simple jacket with a draped front creates a slimming silhouette. Try this faux suede jacket by Blank NYC.
- If your body type is “more below the waist” make sure the bottom of your jacket hits at the widest part of your hips (or thighs). This minimizes the area. This knit Moto jacket by Vince add interest to your top half and are a great way to draw the eye upward.
The Dark Skinny Jean

The Skinny Jean has become a staple in every woman’s closet. Denim that has a touch of spandex or elastane are incredibly comfortable. A mid-rise, dark wash jean with minimal whiskering is flattering on everyone. These jeans by Frame are a favorite amongst my clients and these Wit and Wisdom skinnies are a close second, and are available in plus sizes.
The White Sneaker

You can’t help but notice that sneakers have infiltrated fashion. In San Francisco, we’ve known them as a “must-have” item for trekking our steep hills. Lucky for us, the fashion world has caught on and we are now bombarded with sleek, stylish options that are not only comfortable, but can upgrade an outfit. The low-top white sneaker, like this one by Royale Sneaker is the perfect item to pair with your skinny jeans and soft jacket, but could easily be paired with a cropped trouser and blazer.
