The Cardigan Three Ways

When we think of cardigans it’s hard not to associate them with librarians and Mr. Rogers. They haven’t made a real fashion statement since the ’90s, with on-screen-characters-turned-fashion-icons like Cher Horowitz serving as a poster child for the trend. And although the cardigan may get a bad rap for its prim and properness, we believe that the preppy sweater has emerged as one of the most versatile layering pieces of winter. I believe it is a must for everyone’s wardrobe.
To start, we recommend choosing a lightweight, v-neck style - like this one from Everlane - that hits right at your hip line, lengthening any silhouette. Here are three ways to style this perfect layering staple:
Casual
To steer clear of venturing into granny territory, pair with a graphic t-shirt and fun, of-the-moment kicky jeans to modernize the look. Leave the cardigan open and push the sleeves up towards your elbow to give it an even more relaxed feel. Pushing that sleeve up also draws the eye up to your “waist” lengthening your leg line. Remember the 1/3 (torso) 2/3 (waist down) rule!
Professional
You can’t deny how necessary a cardigan is to counteract that frigid air blowing out of the office vent. One of the best features of a v-neck cardi, like this one, is its versatility. It’s easy to wear with different top necklines, plus pairs well with pants, skirts and dresses. For an extremely polished and professional look, pair with tailored pieces like tapered trousers, a pencil skirt, or a classic sheath dress. You’ll be ready to rock your next meeting!
Night Out
Want a sexy, evening look? Turn your cardigan into a top by crossing one side over the other and securing it with a belt. Place the belt at your true waist (the smallest part) to create an hourglass silhouette. To add some dimension and complexity to the look, I recommend mixing prints and textures like a snakeskin belt and lace tights.
