Form and Function: Understanding and Dressing Your Shape
Since March, I have been digging into our remote services and it’s been a fun and gratifying challenge to bring what we do in person to clients all over the country and even overseas. I have worked with clients via Zoom since March. Our process and materials are different, but the connection to clients remains the same.
“<What surprised me the most about working remotely with DC Style Factory is> how personal the service felt and how much Rosana ‘got’ me, the flexibility of her approach to fit, and <understanding of> what I was trying to achieve.”
Another aspect that remains the same between in-person and remote work with clients are our discussions about body shape and size and, more specifically, the unrelenting critique of ourselves. The human condition and existing in these bodies — equal parts strong and fragile — is something I will never take for granted. It is the greatest gift of this career: I get to see me in all of you.
Two months ago, an interaction with a new client inspired me to go more in-depth with a key component of our styling process: dressing for body shape. She sent me a picture of herself in pants pointing out why she “always wears longer tops to cover up.” It is a familiar conversation. It is difficult to witness someone’s shame. It is not pity or sympathy that I feel, but it is reminds me of all the times I covered up something because I was ashamed. We all are conditioned to cover up, to apologize, to make excuses for who we are. We have been taught we are never enough.
Instead of ignoring her statement, I faced it head on. I told her I did not want any more pictures, discussion, or language where she disparaged herself. I told her that I was really excited to to work with her, but there was only one way for us to move through this process that would yield tangible, positive results — with love. We would have to agree together, as two grown women who understand what self respect and self care means (and I’m not talking about facials or bath salts), that there would be no more body shaming during our appointments.
She agreed. I agreed. We moved forward.
Together via Zoom we took her measurements, but not in a rushed way to get it done and avoid the numbers. We looked at her measurements together, we went through the math, we talked about visuals, and we simplified in a few key goals how we would be dressing her. We slowed it all down so we could understand, make plans, and get excited for the kick-ass style we would create together! It felt so wonderful for both of us.
That appointment is what inspired the creation of this latest DC Style Factory styling package, Form and Function: Understanding and Dressing Your Shape. I had so much fun putting it together! I am excited for you to get excited about dressing yourself! I love the idea of this as a holiday gift too. Instead of another sweater, how about tools for a deeper appreciation and understanding of your body and dressing you?
This Form and Function styling package is available this holiday season only while supplies last. We will ship the package to you in the mail that will include:
- Body Shape Cards. These illustrated cards detail five main body types that will help you understand your shape. They will help you put into practice key styling goals for your shape. The cards also include ideas, suggestions, and pro-advice for styling yourself up!
- Body Shape Worksheets. These comprehensive worksheets will walk you through how to take your measurements, the two-step process to defining your shape, calculations, and more. The key is not just to focus on the visuals, but the numbers behind shape and proportion. Calculating your measurements helps you shift from subjective judgement to a concrete understanding of proportion.
- DC Style Factory tape measure to take your measurements.
- A DC Style Factory pen to record your measurements, calculations, notes and more.
- Selfie Card. Most fun of all, you will get to share the outfit that you put together based on the worksheets and body shape cards. You will email this outfit to me using directions on the selfie card. I will review your look and send practical tips, pro feedback, etc. You will be on your way to creating more looks that work for your shape and proportions!
