A few weeks ago, my friend and make-up artist Audrey Lefevre asked me to style a photoshoot for local photographer, Zoltan Heyningen this past Sunday. I had such a positive experience working with Audrey a few years ago when we did a video shoot for local designers Erika Schrieber and Sophie Blake Jewelry. I was elated to work alongside her and to meet Zoltan.
After finding out that the shoot was taking place at Harwood Horse Farm, a working horse farm in Howard County, we all agreed that we wanted the overall theme to be high-fashion editorial — with a western flair. This would complement AND juxtapose the backdrop of the farm. After finalizing the look of the shoot, I immediately contacted jewelry designer Sophie Blake, shoe boutique The Shoe Hive in Alexandria, and clothing boutique Take 5.
It’s always such a pleasure pulling from local shops and designers because I love showcasing what DC area has to offer in fashion. We shop for clients from all three of these local retailers so I knew they would have pieces that would be perfect for what we had planned. They did did not disappoint. Each look came together seamlessly and once we started seeing some of the test shots — we knew we had nailed it.
As a fashion stylist — whether I am working with a client or on a photoshoot set — I always prepare for the unexpected. Upon arrival, the weather called for clear skies with a high around 80…the perfect day for an outdoor photoshoot. But, right when we were starting to shoot the models, Mother Nature had other plans: the wind kicked up and the clouds started rolling in.
Part of the process of planning for a shoot is to make sure all looks are organized and marked so that you can access them quickly for models. We taped (triple tape!) the bottoms of shoes beforehand as well so we did not waste time having to get that done during the shoot. That helped us move things along quickly in case the sky opened up. We hustled, hustled, hustled and were able to finish shooting all our planned looks!
I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. Enjoy!
